World Physiotherapy Day 2026: Elevating the Role of Physiotherapy in Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke Care
Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), UKM, through its Department of Medical Rehabilitation Services, hosted the Opening Ceremony of World Physiotherapy Day 2026 on 26 September 2026 at the Multipurpose Hall, Chancellor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM. The event was officiated by HCTM Director, Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin.
In his keynote address, Dato’ Dr. Azmi highlighted that cardiovascular diseases and stroke remain leading causes of mortality and disability worldwide. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, cardiovascular diseases claim an estimated 17.9 million lives annually, with over 85 percent resulting from heart attacks and strokes.
Furthermore, data from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) reveals a rising prevalence of risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity. Notably, stroke traditionally associated with older populations is increasingly affecting individuals of working age, posing significant socioeconomic challenges for the nation.
Within this context, physiotherapy plays an indispensable role across the entire continuum of care:
As part of the celebrations, a team-based explorace combining physical, cognitive and teamwork challenges was organized. A total of 56 participants competed in the activity, designed to test stamina, promote cardiovascular health, encourage active movement, sharpen problem-solving abilities and foster team cohesion.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), UKM, hosted the HCTM Service Awards 2026 on 25 September 2026 at Dewan Canselor Tun Abdul Razak (DECTAR), UKM.
The ceremony served as a meaningful tribute from the university and hospital management to honor the dedication, loyalty and commitment of staff members who consistently deliver excellent healthcare services to the community.
The event was officiated by UKM Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Prof. Dr. Ismanizan Ismail, representing the Vice-Chancellor of UKM.
In his opening address, Prof. Dr. Ismanizan congratulated the 485 award recipients. Among them, 310 staff received the Excellent Service Award, 153 were honored with the 20-Year Long Service Award and 22 received the 30-Year Long Service Award.
He highlighted that as a teaching hospital, HCTM carries a major responsibility in upholding UKM’s reputation through clinical expertise, professionalism, integrity, and empathy. He emphasized that the quality of healthcare should not be measured solely by technological advancement, but by the compassion and responsibility demonstrated when caring for patients and their families.
Addressing the evolving healthcare landscape, he urged staff to leverage modern tools like Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimize efficiency and clinical accuracy, while maintaining human compassion, empathy and integrity as core service values.
The event also featured the symbolic pre-launch of the HCTM Transit House and HCTMTV Studio by the Deputy Secretary-General (Policy) of the Ministry of Higher Education, Mr. Ahmad Rizal Adnan initiatives aimed at enhancing staff welfare facilities and strengthening corporate digital communications.
The evening was further celebrated with musical performances by ARTISUKMA UKM, 10 lucky draw sessions and the presentation of the Pesona Anggun Best Dressed Awards (Male and Female categories).
Key dignitaries in attendance included UKM Board of Directors member Dato’ Dr. Mohd Zaidi Md Zain @ Zakaria, HCTM Director Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, and Chairman of the HCTM Service Awards Committee / Deputy Director (Administration), Mr. Mursidi Ahamad.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through the Department of Surgery and Advanced Surgical Skills Center (ASSC), organised the Community Outreach Programme, “Meet the Health Experts”, in conjunction with the Vascular Disease Awareness Month. The programme was held on 9 and 10 September 2026 at the Multipurpose Hall & Hulu Selangor District Sports Complex, Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor.
The programme, officiated by HCTM Director, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, is part of the hospital’s annual initiative to raise public awareness of vascular diseases, particularly in relation to symptoms, risk factors, early detection, prevention, care and treatment.
In his officiating speech, he said that this year marks the third year the programme has been conducted outside HCTM. The programme was previously held in Manjung District, Perak, in 2024 and Mersing District, Johor, in 2025, while Kuala Kubu Bharu was selected as the target destination this year.
The two-day programme, which commenced today, offered a variety of activities for the local community, including free health screenings for blood vessel and kidney diseases, health talks, as well as consultation sessions with medical specialists.
Members of the local community had the opportunity to receive consultations and examinations from vascular and nephrology specialists, enabling them to assess the health of their blood vessels and kidneys.
YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi also urged members of the public to make regular health check-ups a routine practice and to promptly seek medical examination and treatment at the nearest healthcare facility if they experience any signs or symptoms associated with arterial or venous diseases.
The programme was also organised with the cooperation and support of the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan Campus, Selangor State Health Department (JKNS), Kuala Kubu Bharu Hospital, Hulu Selangor District Health Office (PKDHS), Hulu Selangor Department of Orang Asli Development (JAKOA), Hulu Selangor District and Land Office (PDTHS), Hulu Selangor District Department of National Unity and Integration (JPNIN), and Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS).

In conjunction with World Patient Safety Day 2026 at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), the Infection Control Unit reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety through World Patient Safety Day 2026 Programme. The programme was held on 9 September 2026 at 2.30 p.m. at the Gallery, Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM.
In his opening address, YBhg. Dato Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM, emphasised that patient safety is a fundamental pillar of delivering high-quality, safe and ethical healthcare that places patients at the heart of care.
He highlighted that this year’s theme, “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases,” with the slogan “Safe Care for Life,” is highly relevant to the challenges facing healthcare services today, particularly in managing noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer and kidney disease. These conditions require continuous treatment, monitoring and long-term management.
“Patient safety must remain a priority throughout every stage of the care journey, from diagnosis and medication management to procedures and surgery, as well as ongoing monitoring and transitions in care,” he said.
All HCTM staff were encouraged to continuously reflect on and review their daily work practices, particularly in relation to effective communication, accurate patient identification, medication safety, the accuracy of treatments and procedures, and the confidence to speak up whenever they encounter situations that may compromise patient safety.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), continues to strengthen its commitment to inclusive healthcare through the organisation of the HCTM Sign Language Course: Empowering Inclusive Communication in Healthcare Services, held today.
The course, which focuses on equipping hospital staff with basic sign language skills, is part of HCTM’s efforts to enhance their ability to communicate effectively with patients from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.
HCTM Director, Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, said clear, effective and empathetic communication is essential in delivering quality healthcare, as information relating to symptoms, treatment procedures, medication and follow-up care can directly affect patients’ safety and well-being.
He emphasised that basic sign language proficiency should not be viewed merely as an additional skill, but as part of HCTM’s broader commitment to providing healthcare services that are more welcoming, inclusive and respectful of every patient’s needs.
“Even simple gestures, such as greeting a patient, asking how they are, giving directions or explaining a basic procedure, can help build their confidence and make them feel valued, safe and understood,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the HCTM Sign Language Course at Multipurpose Hall 2, HCTM Extension Building, today.
He added that the initiative is also aligned with the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities.
Beyond learning basic sign language and communication techniques, participants were also encouraged to understand the perspectives, emotions and needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in order to foster more empathetic and meaningful interactions.
The course was organised in collaboration with the Quality Department, HCTM SDG Committee, and the Training and Career Development Unit, Human Resources Department.

The Children’s Nursery (TASKA) Sports Day 2026 at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was held on August 22, 2026. The event was filled with joy and lively energy, featuring the participation of 66 nursery children, alongside teachers and parents who joined in various sporting and recreational activities.
The opening ceremony took place at the Main Lobby Foyer of the Pre-clinical Building, Faculty of Medicine, and was officially launched by Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM. This annual event serves as a platform to encourage healthy lifestyles while supporting the physical, mental, and social development of young children.
During his opening address, Dato’ Dr. Azmi expressed his gratitude to the HCTM nursery staff, the organizing committee, educators, and parents for their commitment and cooperation in making the event a success. He noted that the sports day not only brings excitement to the children’s routine but also strengthens the bond between the nursery and families.
Active parental involvement plays a crucial role in building children’s confidence to try new things, he added. The sports day is viewed as an essential early childhood learning experience, using movement and team games to enhance motor coordination, boost self-esteem, and foster sportsmanship.
Children and families took part in a variety of engaging games, including matching socks and dressing children, shape-matching puzzles, ball-in-basket challenges, a “gold bar” treasure hunt and plate-based ball-transfer relays.
Ultimately, the HCTM TASKA Sports Day 2026 was more than just fun and games, it provided a meaningful experience that helps shape active, confident and courageous children who value friendship and teamwork.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, officially launched its hospital-level World Hand Hygiene Day 2026 celebration on 19 August 2026 at 9.00 a.m. The event was held at the Gallery of the Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex and officiated by HCTM Director, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin.
The annual observance goes beyond being a symbolic reminder. It serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the culture of patient safety and promote continuous improvements in the quality of healthcare delivery. Hand hygiene remains one of the simplest yet most critical measures in breaking the chain of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).
“Whether you are a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, science officer, healthcare assistant, support staff or visitor, each of us has a responsibility to practise proper hand hygiene in accordance with established guidelines. We all have an important role to play in breaking the chain of microorganism transmission,” he said during the launch ceremony.
Dato’ Dr. Azmi also called on the entire HCTM community to embrace and consistently practise the WHO-recommended My Five Moments for Hand Hygiene. He emphasised that this commitment should be reinforced through continuous education, effective monitoring and a workplace culture where colleagues feel encouraged to remind and support one another.
He also expressed his highest appreciation and congratulations to the Infection Control Unit, led by Dr. Sharifah Azura Salleh as Chairperson of the Programme Committee, along with all members who worked tirelessly to ensure the successful organisation of the event.
The ceremony was also attended by Associate Professor Dr. Jamari Sapuan, Deputy Director of Surgical Services, Dr. Zairul Azwan Mohd Azman, Deputy Director of Medical Services, and Mr. Mursidi Ahamad, Deputy Director of Administration.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through the Health Information Department, held the Signing Ceremony for the Mutual Agreement on the Medical Records Disposal Schedule between HCTM and the National Archives of Malaysia at Sukmaria, Clinical Block, HCTM, on 12 March 2026.
HCTM Director, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, described the ceremony as a significant milestone, marking HCTM’s official adoption of the Medical Records Disposal Schedule endorsed by the National Archives of Malaysia. He stated that this recognition further strengthens the governance and management of medical records within the institution.
“Medical records are essential documents that capture patients’ treatment histories and serve as key references in ensuring continuity of care.
“Beyond that, these records are also crucial in fulfilling legal requirements, supporting research activities, and facilitating health statistics reporting,” he said in his speech during the ceremony.
He further emphasised that the management of the medical records lifecycle, from creation to disposal, must be carried out systematically while adhering to all applicable acts, policies, regulations, and procedures. This initiative is vital in ensuring that the security and confidentiality of patient information remain protected in accordance with the requirements of relevant stakeholders.
The ceremony was also attended by YBrs. Tuan Haji Zaidin Mohd Noor, Director General of the National Archives of Malaysia, directors from various divisions of the National Archives of Malaysia, HCTM Deputy Directors, Puan Hanuzah Omar, Head of the HCTM Health Information Department, as well as senior officers from both HCTM and the National Archives of Malaysia. The collaboration reflects HCTM’s ongoing commitment to strengthening healthcare governance through effective, secure, and accountable medical records management practices.
