In conjunction with World Patient Safety Day 2026 at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), the Infection Control Unit reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety through World Patient Safety Day 2026 Programme. The programme was held on 9 September 2026 at 2.30 p.m. at the Gallery, Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM.

In his opening address, YBhg. Dato Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM, emphasised that patient safety is a fundamental pillar of delivering high-quality, safe and ethical healthcare that places patients at the heart of care.

He highlighted that this year’s theme, “Safe Care for Noncommunicable Diseases,” with the slogan “Safe Care for Life,” is highly relevant to the challenges facing healthcare services today, particularly in managing noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, cancer and kidney disease. These conditions require continuous treatment, monitoring and long-term management.

“Patient safety must remain a priority throughout every stage of the care journey, from diagnosis and medication management to procedures and surgery, as well as ongoing monitoring and transitions in care,” he said.

All HCTM staff were encouraged to continuously reflect on and review their daily work practices, particularly in relation to effective communication, accurate patient identification, medication safety, the accuracy of treatments and procedures, and the confidence to speak up whenever they encounter situations that may compromise patient safety.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), continues to strengthen its commitment to inclusive healthcare through the organisation of the HCTM Sign Language Course: Empowering Inclusive Communication in Healthcare Services, held today.

The course, which focuses on equipping hospital staff with basic sign language skills, is part of HCTM’s efforts to enhance their ability to communicate effectively with patients from the deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

HCTM Director, Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, said clear, effective and empathetic communication is essential in delivering quality healthcare, as information relating to symptoms, treatment procedures, medication and follow-up care can directly affect patients’ safety and well-being.

He emphasised that basic sign language proficiency should not be viewed merely as an additional skill, but as part of HCTM’s broader commitment to providing healthcare services that are more welcoming, inclusive and respectful of every patient’s needs.

“Even simple gestures, such as greeting a patient, asking how they are, giving directions or explaining a basic procedure, can help build their confidence and make them feel valued, safe and understood,” he said in his speech at the closing ceremony of the HCTM Sign Language Course at Multipurpose Hall 2, HCTM Extension Building, today.

He added that the initiative is also aligned with the aspirations of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 10, which focuses on reducing inequalities.

Beyond learning basic sign language and communication techniques, participants were also encouraged to understand the perspectives, emotions and needs of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community in order to foster more empathetic and meaningful interactions.

The course was organised in collaboration with the Quality Department, HCTM SDG Committee, and the Training and Career Development Unit, Human Resources Department.

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, officially launched its hospital-level World Hand Hygiene Day 2026 celebration on 19 August 2026 at 9.00 a.m. The event was held at the Gallery of the Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex and officiated by HCTM Director, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin.

The annual observance goes beyond being a symbolic reminder. It serves as a strategic platform to strengthen the culture of patient safety and promote continuous improvements in the quality of healthcare delivery. Hand hygiene remains one of the simplest yet most critical measures in breaking the chain of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

“Whether you are a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, science officer, healthcare assistant, support staff or visitor, each of us has a responsibility to practise proper hand hygiene in accordance with established guidelines. We all have an important role to play in breaking the chain of microorganism transmission,” he said during the launch ceremony.

Dato’ Dr. Azmi also called on the entire HCTM community to embrace and consistently practise the WHO-recommended My Five Moments for Hand Hygiene. He emphasised that this commitment should be reinforced through continuous education, effective monitoring and a workplace culture where colleagues feel encouraged to remind and support one another.

He also expressed his highest appreciation and congratulations to the Infection Control Unit, led by Dr. Sharifah Azura Salleh as Chairperson of the Programme Committee, along with all members who worked tirelessly to ensure the successful organisation of the event.

The ceremony was also attended by Associate Professor Dr. Jamari Sapuan, Deputy Director of Surgical Services,  Dr. Zairul Azwan Mohd Azman, Deputy Director of Medical Services, and Mr. Mursidi Ahamad, Deputy Director of Administration.

As HCTM embarks on 2026, the Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, outlined four strategic priorities to drive the hospital’s continued pursuit of excellence during his Director’s Address at the HCTM Staff Assembly No. 1/2026, held on 4 February 2026. The key priorities include accelerating digital transformation, strengthening sustainability practices in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), reinforcing a culture of integrity, and expanding community engagement initiatives.

In his address, the Director encouraged all staff to move forward with a shared sense of purpose and a clear strategic direction. He emphasised the importance of leveraging digital platforms such as myHCTM and ePesakit@HCTM to enhance service efficiency while embedding sustainable practices and upholding integrity in every aspect of decision-making and service delivery. Together, these four priorities will serve as the foundation for HCTM’s efforts to realise its vision and mission of delivering sustainable, ethical, and high-impact healthcare services to the community.

The Director also expressed his sincere appreciation to all staff for their unwavering dedication and commitment, which have been instrumental in the hospital’s achievements. The assembly also featured several significant highlights, including the launch of ‘Bila ST Bersuara’ Podcast Season 2, the symbolic handover of the Bereavement Room key, the presentation of the UKM Bitara Utama Award certificates, departmental appreciation awards, the launch of the Mortality and Morbidity Book, and the prize presentation ceremony for the HCTM Slogan Creation Competition. With the continued support, commitment, and collaboration of its workforce, HCTM is well positioned to advance further and remain a healthcare institution that inspires pride and confidence among the communities it serves.
