17 Oct 2016

The 19th Annual Family Medicine Specialists Scientific Conference 2016 was held at Hotel Grand Dorsett Subang from the 10th-13th August 2016. This Conference was an annual conference organized by Malaysian Family Medicine Specialist Association (FMSA)  which was collaborated with the Malaysia Ministry of Health (MOH).

At this year’s conference, a total of 11 posters were presented by the lecturers from the Department of Family Medicine UKMMC. A lecturer from the department, Assoc Prof Dr Noor Azimah Muhammad, was appointed as a judge for the oral presentation at the conference, while two lecturers from the department, Dr Hizlinda Tohid and Dr Teh Rohaila Jamil were involved as members of the organising committee. Three lecturers from the UKMMC, Assoc Prof Dr Leelavathi (Family Medicine Department UKMMC), Prof Dr Tong Seng Fah (Family Medicine Department UKMMC) and Assoc Prof Dr Ani Amelia (Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology UKMMC)   were invited as symposium speakers.

The conference was officiated by the Director General of the Malaysia MOH, the Honourable Datuk Dr. Noor Hisham bin Abdullah. In his speech, he emphasised that Malaysia still lacks about 3000 family medicine specialists (FMSs) to serve in all MOH facilities. At this moment, there are only 300 FMSs serving at government health clinics. Since there are 983 health clinics all over the country, the current amount of FMSs is inadequate. He hopes that every clinic will have two to three FMSs. Thus, university should work to fulfil the need through producing more FMSs who are knowledgeable and competent.
