Kelab KEKASIH Annual Merdeka-Raya Celebration 2015

Kelab KEKASIH, a stroke survivors’ and caregivers’ support group held its second annual MerdekaRaya celebration on 16th September 2015 at the Gallery, Blok Pendidikan Canselor Tuanku Jaafar, UKM Medical Centre.
The annual celebration is a joint affair to celebrate the national Independence Day as well as a belated Eid celebration. The aim of the activity is to foster a healthy and supportive relationship among stroke survivors and caregivers, while promoting physical independence and improved cognitive skills. The annual event is also held to recruit new members to join KEKASIH. The event was jointly organised by KEKASIH with the help of staff from Pusat Perubatan Primer UKM (PPPUKM).
The event was officiated by Professor Dr Sharifa Ezat Wan Puteh, the Head of Community and Industrial Relations (HEJIM) for Faculty of Medicine. Dr Law Zhe Kang, Neurologist from Dept of Internal Medicine, HCTM started the program with a talk entitled “ Am I having a stroke?”, followed by a cooking demonstration by Puan Linda and her team from Bumi Perak United group. The return of the popular ‘musical chairs championship’ was met with enthusiastic response from the participants.
The event was attended by almost 100 participants, which included stroke survivors, caregivers, family members and therapists from the Medical Rehabilitation Services Department (JPPP) and staff of Pusat Perubatan Primer UKM Bandar Tasek Selatan. The event concluded at 1pm.
KEKASIH was established in 2013 on the initiative of the Long term Stroke Clinic (Klinik Lanjutan Strok) in collaboration with the Department of Family Medicine to establish a support groups for stroke patients in the community to carry out various social and community activities . Apart from strengthening social ties it also aims to bridge the gap between patients and medical staff at the clinic. The club also provides a medium for stroke patients to be independent in carrying out certain tasks in line with the aim of their rehabilitation to be reintegrated back in the community . The club, through its activities also serves as a platform to promote health awareness to the public, primarily concerned with stroke care.
