The Official Opening Ceremony of the Seminar on Development of a National Health Insurance: Roles and Functions in Supporting Universal Health Coverage in Middle-Income Countries, organised by the Asia Pacific Network for Health Systems Strengthening (ANHSS) in collaboration with Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was held on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, at Dewan Khalid Kadir, HCTM.

The opening ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus. The ANHSS, a network comprising nine institutions in collaboration with the World Bank Institute, has been active for over 15 years in strengthening health systems across Asia through knowledge exchange and capacity development.

In his speech, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah emphasized that in Asia, healthcare is recognised as a fundamental human right. He noted that the pursuit of universal health coverage (UHC) continues despite challenges such as rising costs and workforce limitations. He also highlighted the commendable progress in health performance across Southeast Asia, which must be maintained and further enhanced. Additionally, he emphasized the crucial role of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in shaping the future of healthcare systems, while cautioning that their adoption must be approached carefully to prevent unintended inequalities and biases.

Also present at the ceremony were YBhg. Prof. Dr. Laksono Trisnantoro, Director of the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, and Chair of the Seminar; YBhg. The Opening Ceremony of the Pink October 2025 Program at the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was successfully organized by the Breast & Endocrine Unit, Department of Surgery, in collaboration with the Department of Radiology and the Department of Nursing Services, HCTM. The event took place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Main Lobby of HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by YBhg: Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kuala Lumpur Campus.

October is globally and nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This program was held to educate the public on the dangers of the disease and to emphasize the importance of early detection, which significantly increases the chances of recovery. As an academic healthcare institution, HCTM takes its role in care, treatment, and public health education seriously. The Pink October program not only aims to enhance public knowledge but also reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to championing women’s health and community well-being.

Opening Ceremony of World Mental Health Day Celebration 2025

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through its Department of Psychiatry, successfully organised the opening ceremony of the World Mental Health Day 2025 Celebration along with the Launch of the TULUS and KASIH Units on Friday, 10 October 2025, at the Auditorium, Chancellor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by Professor Dr. Nik Ruzyanei Nik Jaafar, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, on behalf of the Director of HCTM.

This year’s programme carried the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”, emphasising the importance of ensuring accessible mental health services, particularly in the context of disasters and emergencies. The main objectives were to strengthen mental health awareness, improve accessibility through the launch of two new units, and foster strategic collaborations, all while reaffirming mental health support as a fundamental human right.

The launch of the TULUS Unit and KASIH Unit, developed in collaboration with MERCY Malaysia, marks a significant enhancement to HCTM’s mental health services. These units represent the shared commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to quality community-based mental health support. Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and various natural disasters have underlined the urgent need for comprehensive mental health care.

In line with this, the Department of Psychiatry has also initiated several innovative programmes, including Psychological First Aid, debriefing sessions, counselling, and psychosocial support during the pandemic and flood emergencies. Additionally, IRYS, an interactive chatbot, was introduced to support healthcare workers in monitoring emotional wellbeing, managing stress, and promoting self-recovery strategies. This initiative also extends support to patients’ families, medical students, and HCTM staff as a whole.

Opening Ceremony of the Women’s Seminar ‘Women’s Holistic Health 2025’

The opening ceremony of the Women’s Seminar entitled “Women’s Holistic Health 2025” was successfully held on Thursday, 9 October 2025, at Multipurpose Hall 1 & 2, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). The event was officiated by YBrs. Puan Masrifah Zakaria, Head of Nursing Services Department, HCTM, representing HCTM Management.

The seminar aimed to empower women to be more aware of and take better care of their health in a holistic manner, encompassing physical, mental, and emotional aspects. With greater awareness, women are hoped to achieve optimal personal well-being, which will ultimately benefit their families and society at large.

The event gathered over 150 participants, including HCTM healthcare staff and external attendees from various other healthcare institutions. Participating organisations included Hospital Seremban, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Hospital Selayang, and several private hospitals around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. The diverse presence made the seminar a meaningful platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration.

This seminar also provided valuable opportunities for participants to enhance their knowledge and build beneficial networks to advance the women’s health agenda in the country. HCTM’s Director Talk in Conjunction with Staff Assembly No. 2/2025 was held on 9 October 2025 (Thursday) at the Auditorium, Chancellor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), attended by over 300 HCTM staff members. The event was enlivened with an opening performance presented by a group under the portfolio of the Deputy Director (Diagnostic Services, Pharmacy, and Support).

The main focus of this event was to recognize the achievements and excellence of HCTM from February to September 2025. Key agendas included a Speech of Appreciation and Congratulations on the appointment of new leadership at UKM and HCTM, highlights of significant accomplishments, awards and recognition for staff, reports on HCTM’s performance progress, as well as presentations on the latest updates covering Human Resources, Infrastructure, Financial Performance, and Customer Feedback.

In his speech, YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM, expressed his hope that with a strong spirit of unity and high professionalism, HCTM will continue to advance as an internationally recognized healthcare center, excelling not only in clinical and research fields but also becoming the top choice for the community seeking the best medical treatment. During the assembly, HCTM staff were given the opportunity for a Question & Answer session with HCTM Management and to provide direct feedback and suggestions.

Senior Citizens Day Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz

“Let’s Wear Purple as a Sign of Love and Appreciation” event in conjunction with the 2025 Senior Citizens Day Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was recorded on 1 October 2025 (Wednesday) at the Main Lobby, HCTM.

This program, organized by the Customer Service Department (JKP) in collaboration with the Corporate Communications Department and the Multimedia and Broadcasting Department, aims to honor and appreciate the contributions of senior citizens in line with the 2025 theme, “Empowering the Voices of Senior Citizens Towards an Inclusive Future.”

HCTM staff from various departments/centers/units are coming together to support this campaign by wearing purple attire or accessories. Senior citizens will also be honored with the presentation of daisies, symbolizing appreciation and respect. Additionally, patient wheelchair services will be provided for elderly patients to all their appointment locations using specially decorated wheelchairs to ensure their comfort.

Furthermore, HCTM will conduct face-to-face surveys to measure customer satisfaction at the JKP counter, to ensure the service quality consistently meets the needs of senior citizens and the wider community. The Opening Ceremony of the World Physiotherapy Day 2025 Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was held on Saturday, 27 September 2025, at the Physiotherapy Unit, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine Services, HCTM.Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the health recovery process, empowering patients to achieve overall strength, balance, and physical stability. In line with efforts to promote physical fitness, mental resilience, and effective communication skills, an Explorace activity was organized in conjunction with the World Physiotherapy Day celebration. This activity was aligned with this year’s theme, “Beat Yourself, Conquer This Challenge.” A total of 56 participants, comprising members of the public and staff, took the opportunity to challenge their physical endurance and fitness through this program. In his speech, Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM, stated that such activities help foster team spirit and enhance group motivation. He also emphasized that teamwork is crucial, particularly in completing tasks effectively. Opening Ceremony of the HPV Infection Awareness Program

The Opening Ceremony of the HPV Infection Awareness Program, jointly organized by the Faculty of Medicine and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was held on Friday, 26 September 2025, at the Lobby Area of the Advanced Reproductive Centre (ARC), Clinical Block, HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by Prof. Datin Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, UKM. The main objective of the program was to raise public awareness about Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections, their modes of transmission and prevention, and to encourage HPV vaccination as a safe and effective preventive measure. Additionally, the program aimed to break the stigma and build public confidence in preventive measures related to HPV-associated diseases, particularly cervical cancer. Also in attendance were Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM, Professor Dr. Mohamad Nasir Shafiee, Deputy Dean (Research & Innovation) and Program Director, Senior Officers, and Members of the UKM community.

World Retina Day and World Sight Day 2025

World Retina Day and World Sight Day 2025 Celebration Program Organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was held on Friday, 26 September 2025, at the Main Lobby, Clinical Block, HCTM. World Retina Day is observed annually on the last Sunday of September, while World Vision Day is celebrated on the second Thursday of October. Both events aim to raise global awareness about eye health issues, including the importance of vision, preventive measures against eye diseases, and ongoing efforts to tackle blindness. The program began with a welcoming speech by Dr. Othmaliza Othman, Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, followed by the opening speech by Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM. In his remarks, he expressed hope that this program would provide greater public awareness on the importance of eye health, thereby increasing efforts to prevent eye diseases and reduce the risk of vision problems. Also present at the event were Dr. Ayesha Mohd Zain, Head of the Medical Retina Unit and Chairperson of the World Retina Day and World Sight Day 2025 Organizing Committee, Senior Officers, and HCTM staff.
