Occupation and Mental Health Seminar

13 Mar 2019

On March 6th, 2019, the Psychiatric Department held an Occupational and Mental Health Seminar to enlighten these seminar participants about the importance of mental health issues today. Mental illness is expected to be the second biggest health problem affecting Malaysians by 2020 after heart disease. According to the latest National Health Morbidity Survey, every three people in 10 adults over 16 suffer from various mental health issues.

Unfortunately, many still do not understand this disease, especially in terms of the term ‘common mental disorders’, the possible causes and consequences, as well as identifying early symptoms of major mental illness. At the same time, there is still a stigma associated with mental illness from a cultural perspective formed by superstition and wrong responses. (Kosmo! Online, April 2018).

A total of 120 participants participated in the seminar. The talk was delivered by Dr. Shalisah Sharip, (Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatric Department, PPUKM), Prof. Dr. Marhani Midin, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Azlin Baharudin,  Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wan Salwina Wan Ismail and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nik Ruzyanei Nik Jaafar (Psychiatrist, Psychiatric Department, PPUKM). Among the topics of the talk delivered are Job Stress, Tips on how to handle Troubled Patients, How to Handle Stress when You Have Mental Problems and others. The program has been running smoothly and participants hope that such programs can be carried out again to give exposure to Malaysians about the importance of mental health.
