This 3-day\u00a0symposium was\u00a0attended by approximately\u00a0176\u00a0local and international delegates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was the first time the symposium was held together,\u00a0in collaboration with the Ministry of Health Malaysia, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia, Malaysian Universities Conjoint Committee of Ophthalmology (MUCCO) and Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS). The ceremony was officiated by Deputy Director General of Higher Education, Professor\u00a0Dr\u00a0Mohd\u00a0Cairul\u00a0Iqbal\u00a0Mohd\u00a0Amin,\u00a0accompanied by\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dato\u2019 Dr\u00a0Razman\u00a0Jarmin\u00a0as the deputy director of the UKM Medical\u00a0Centre\u00a0and other distinguished guests including Head of Department of Ophthalmology, Associate Professor Dr\u00a0Norshamsiah\u00a0Md Din, Symposium Chairperson, Professor Dr Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion and co-chairperson Dr Tang Seng Fai from Department of Ophthalmology, UKM.\u00a0The ceremony was held at the Main Auditorium of UKM Medical\u00a0Centre\u00a0in\u00a0Jalan\u00a0Yaacob\u00a0Latif,\u00a0Cheras.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Keynote lecture entitled \u201cHistory of Cataract Surgery: Efforts to Improve the Quality and Efficiency \u201cwas\u00a0delivered by\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dr Takayuki\u00a0Akahoshi, former\u00a0Director of Ophthalmology\u00a0at the\u00a0Mitsui\u00a0Memorial\u00a0Hospital\u00a0Tokyo Japan. Professor Dr Akahoshi\u00a0is an innovative\u00a0surgeon, best known internationally for developing the Phacoemulsification Pre-chop technique and designing various instrumentation to improve cataract surgery. His techniques greatly reduce surgical time and\u00a0energy which\u00a0leads to a procedure that is\u00a0easier and faster. He holds the record for\u00a0<strong>fastest surgeon in the world<\/strong>\u00a0with his average surgical time\u00a0of\u00a0less than 4 minutes. His\u00a0fastest surgery\u00a0has been recorded at an amazing 1\u00a0minute and 29 seconds!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In conjunction with our symposium, \u00a0the\u00a0Zeiss Lunch Symposium\u00a0was\u00a0presented by internationally renowned expert from Singapore, Associate\u00a0Professor\u00a0Dr Ronald Yeoh on\u00a0the topic,\u00a0\u201c Seamless Workflow: Enhancing the Patient and Surgeon Experience\u201d on the first day. The symposium continued with exciting video presentations\u00a0by Professor Dr\u00a0Akahoshi\u00a0and Associate Professor Dr Yeoh,\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0challenging cases\u00a0experienced in their\u00a0centres.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the second day of the symposium, the delegates were given the opportunity to observe Live Surgery by Prof Akahoshi from the Main Operating Theatre of Hospital UKM beamed to the audience at HUKM Auditorium. The Live Surgery comprised demonstration of operating room preparation and step by step detailed explanation of his phacoemulsification pre-chop technique with\u00a0 variety cases comprising simple to challenging cataract cases such as soft, medium, hard and mature cataracts and cataract in small pupil eye. Following each case of live surgery, an educational interactive session was held, whereby the audience interacted with Prof Dr Akahoshi through a teleconference moderated by Prof Dr Mae-Lynn and Dr Malisa Ami in the Auditorium. The Live surgery segment of NCSS 2019 coordinated by Dr Ayesha Md Zain and her team, was the second Live Ophthalmic surgery session to be held at HUKM in 15 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the lunch break, local cataract expert, Dr Cheong Fook Meng delivered a riveting Alcon lunch talk on \u201cAcrysof Platform: A Marathon Racer\u201d. \u00a0Subsequently, the programme continued with lectures on the steps of basic phacoemulsification by Prof Akahoshi and local expert teachers Dr Kok Howe Sen, Dr Azura Ramlee and Prof Dr Mae-Lynn. The audience of mainly trainees benefited from informative lectures on phacodynamics and basic steps of phacoemulsification surgery as well as various videos used to illustrate the points made.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the last day of the symposium, participants were given the opportunity to perform hands-on phacoemulsification\u00a0in the\u00a0wet lab and supplementary suture lab coordinated by Dr Yong Meng Hsien and his team. Wet lab\u00a0moderator Dr\u00a0Kok Howe\u00a0Sen showed the steps using the\u00a0Kitaro\u00a0eye model. \u00a0Individual supervision and facilitation was provided by him and dedicated UKM Ophthalmology lecturers as well as Dr\u00a0Wan Mohd\u00a0Hafidz from\u00a0MUCCO\u00a0who sacrificed their day to provide instruction\u00a0during the hands-on session using three forms of simulation for cataract surgery namely\u00a0Kitaro\u00a0eyes, goat eyes and synthetic skin.\u00a0The programme ended promptly at 2 pm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NCSS 2019 would not have been possible without the support of the whole committee working together with the agencies involved,\u00a0and the sponsors\u00a0from\u00a0Alcon, Zeiss, Orbit\u00a0Medica, Johnson and Johnson Vision,\u00a0Swissmed, Santen and Schmidt\u00a0BioMedTech.\u00a0The feedback after the symposium was good, with requests for the event to be an annual event.\u00a0The Symposium has succeeded\u00a0in\u00a0elevating the\u00a0Ophthalmology Department of UKM Medical\u00a0Centre to an internationally\u00a0renowned\u00a0training\u00a0centre for cataract surgery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div id=\"attachment_1783\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1783\" class=\"wp-image-1783 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ppukm.ukm.my\/oftalmologi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/pic-1-1024x587.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"587\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">From the left: Associate Prof. Dr Norshamsiah Md Din, Prof. Dr Takayuki Akahoshi, Prof. Dr Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion, Prof. Dr Mohd Cairul Iqbal Mohd Amin and Prof. Dato\u2019 Dr Razman Jarmin during the NCSS 2019 ceremony.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1784\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1784\" class=\"wp-image-1784 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ppukm.ukm.my\/oftalmologi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/pic-2-1024x587.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"587\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Prof.\u00a0Dr\u00a0Mohd\u00a0Cairul\u00a0Iqbal\u00a0Mohd\u00a0Amin knocked the \u2018gong\u2019 to officiate the ceremony.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1781\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1781\" class=\"wp-image-1781 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ppukm.ukm.my\/oftalmologi\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/pic-3-1024x680.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1781\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Participants were enthusiastic\u00a0during the phacoemulsification\u00a0wet\u00a0lab\u00a0training\u00a0under\u00a0supervision by UKM Ophthalmology lecturer, Dr Wan Haslina Wan Abdul Halim.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reported by Dr Nur Shahirah and Professor Dr Mae-Lynn Catherine Bastion On 26th to 28th April 2019, Ophthalmology Department of UKM Medical\u00a0Centre Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz\u00a0successfully\u00a0organised the\u00a0National Cataract Surgery Symposium (NCSS) 2019.
