The Bitara and Quality Inspiration Awards Ceremony of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was held with great festivity on 13 November 2025 (Thursday) at the Auditorium, Kompleks Pendidikan Perubatan Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar, HCTM. A speech was delivered by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM.

This ceremony marked the highlight of the HCTM Quality Day 2025 celebration, aimed at recognising outstanding individuals and teams across various quality-related fields. A total of 54 awards in multiple categories were presented to deserving recipients as a token of appreciation for their commitment, collaboration, and dedication in strengthening the quality culture within HCTM.

The culture of quality is not merely a slogan or an annual event, but a work ethic and core organisational value that must be embraced in every action. Quality culture practices form the foundation of healthcare excellence and are key to ensuring patient safety and well-being, which remain the highest priorities for HCTM.

Congratulations and well done to all recipients of the HCTM 2025 Bitara and Quality Inspiration Awards. May this success catalyse continued efforts to strengthen the culture of excellence and enhance the quality of services at HCTM.

The Official Opening Ceremony of the “Pharmacists As Collaborative Experts” (PACE) 2025 Program, held in conjunction with the World Pharmacists Day Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was successfully conducted on Tuesday, 28 October 2025, at the HCTM Auditorium. The event was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Dr. Hamzaini Abdul Hamid, Deputy Director (Diagnostic, Pharmacy, and Support Services), representing the Director of HCTM.

World Pharmacists Day has been celebrated annually on 25 September since 2009 as a recognition of pharmacists’ contributions worldwide in enhancing the quality of healthcare. This year’s theme, “Think Health, Think Pharmacist,” reinforces the message that pharmacists are no longer confined behind the counter but have become vital pillars in the modern healthcare system. Pharmacists today serve as collaborative experts within healthcare teams across public, private, community, and hospital sectors. Pharmacy services now encompass a wide range of critical areas such as Medication Therapy Adherence Clinics (MTAC), treatment guideline development, and clinical research.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Hamzaini expressed his highest appreciation to the Department of Pharmacy, HCTM, for successfully organizing this impactful symposium for the first time. He also conveyed his confidence that the PACE Symposium is not merely a one-off event, but the beginning of a continuous effort to elevate the pharmacy profession for the well-being of the people and the advancement of the nation’s healthcare system.

Opening Ceremony of HCTM Kindergarten Sports Day (TASKA)

The Kindergarten Sports Day (TASKA) at Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Hospital (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), for the year 2025 was celebrated with great joy on Saturday, 25 October 2025, at the Foyer Lobby, Preclinical Building, Faculty of Medicine, UKM. The opening ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM.

In his speech, the Director expressed his appreciation to the parents for their continuous support and trust in HCTM TASKA. Their participation in activities like this is seen as an opportunity to strengthen the bond between home and the childcare centre, thereby fostering a more harmonious and caring learning environment.

The Sports Day not only provides children with opportunities for physical health but also instills noble values such as teamwork, self-confidence, respect for others, and the spirit of perseverance. These activities are highly encouraged to ensure that sportsmanship values are consistently practiced in daily life, promoting an active lifestyle as a healthy and positive family culture.

Official Opening Ceremony of the Bone and Joint Health Awareness Week 2025

The Official Opening Ceremony of the Bone and Joint Health Awareness Week 2025 at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) was successfully organized by the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, HCTM, in collaboration with the Bone Metabolism Research Group, Faculty of Medicine, UKM. The event was held on 23 October 2025 (Thursday) at the Auditorium, Kompleks Pendidikan Perubatan Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar, HCTM, in conjunction with World Osteoporosis Day, celebrated globally on 20 October each year. The welcoming remarks were delivered by Dr. Muhammad Fathi Hayyun, Chairperson of the 2025 Bone and Joint Health Awareness Week, and the ceremony was officiated by Associate Professor Dr. Nor Hamdan Mohamad Yahaya, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics & Traumatology, on behalf of the Director of HCTM.

This programme aims to raise public awareness about bone health, particularly in preventing osteoporosis, which is increasingly prevalent among the elderly. Current statistics indicate that osteoporosis has become a growing concern, especially within Malaysia’s ageing population. Classified as a non-communicable disease (NCD), the incidence of osteoporosis is expected to continue rising in line with the nation’s demographic trends.

In keeping with advancements in medical technology, government digitalisation initiatives, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0), HCTM has introduced robotic-assisted knee replacement surgery. Since its introduction in 2023, robotic total knee replacement has seen a steady rise in demand among patients. A series of patient education videos has also been launched to provide comprehensive information about this procedure. Meanwhile, research efforts in bone health continue to be strengthened by UKM’s research teams.

The Symbolic Handover of the Donated Health Clinic Building

The symbolic handover of the donated health clinic building took place on 21 October 2025 (Tuesday) at Batu 14 Health Clinic, Hulu Langat. This event was jointly organized by Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and the Hulu Langat District Health Office (PKD).

The main purpose of this symbolic handover was to mark the official transfer of the Mother and Child Clinic building at Batu 14 Health Clinic, as well as the additional building at Batu 9 Health Clinic, from HCTM to the Selangor State Health Department (JKNS). This also serves to confirm the handover of these facilities to JKNS for implementation and further management, in accordance with the guidelines set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM).

The handover session proceeded smoothly and was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM. YBrs. Dr. Wan Noraini Wan Mohamed Noor, Deputy Director of Selangor State Health Department (Public Health), accepted the handover on behalf of JKNS.

‘Gotong-Royong Perdana’ Program 2025

The Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through its 5S Committee, successfully organised the HCTM ‘Gotong-Royong Perdana’ Program 2025 on 15 October 2025, held at the Multipurpose Hall, HCTM. The event began with welcoming remarks by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM.

As a symbolic gesture to officiate the event, the handing over of cleaning equipment was carried out by YBrs. Tuan Haji Zanudin Mohd Daud, UKM Registrar, to YBrs. Encik Muhamad Khairi Khalis, Chairman of the HCTM 5S Committee. This symbolic handover not only marked the official launch of the programme but also reflected the strong commitment of HCTM’s leadership to cleanliness, operational efficiency, and a sustainable hospital environment.

The main objective of the programme was to beautify and clean the departments, units, and centres within HCTM. More than just a physical clean-up, the initiative underscores HCTM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with the global sustainable development agenda towards 2030. It also aligns with the implementation of MSQH Quality Standards and the 5S/QE practices, which emphasise a safe, organised, and competitive working environment.

The programme successfully fostered a spirit of unity and cooperation among HCTM staff, proving that a clean and systematic work culture can be achieved through the active involvement of all levels of personnel. As a leading healthcare institution, HCTM continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the SDGs through various internal initiatives, including the provision of a healthy environment, sustainable resource management, and continuous improvement in healthcare service quality.

Official Opening Ceremony of the Seminar on Development of a National Health Insurance: Roles and Functions in Supporting Universal Health Coverage in Middle-Income Countries

The Official Opening Ceremony of the Seminar on Development of a National Health Insurance: Roles and Functions in Supporting Universal Health Coverage in Middle-Income Countries, organised by the Asia Pacific Network for Health Systems Strengthening (ANHSS) in collaboration with Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was held on Tuesday, 14 October 2025, at Dewan Khalid Kadir, HCTM.

The opening ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor of UKM Kuala Lumpur Campus. The ANHSS, a network comprising nine institutions in collaboration with the World Bank Institute, has been active for over 15 years in strengthening health systems across Asia through knowledge exchange and capacity development.

In his speech, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah emphasized that in Asia, healthcare is recognised as a fundamental human right. He noted that the pursuit of universal health coverage (UHC) continues despite challenges such as rising costs and workforce limitations. He also highlighted the commendable progress in health performance across Southeast Asia, which must be maintained and further enhanced. Additionally, he emphasized the crucial role of emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, in shaping the future of healthcare systems, while cautioning that their adoption must be approached carefully to prevent unintended inequalities and biases.

The Opening Ceremony of the Pink October 2025 Program at the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), was successfully organized by the Breast & Endocrine Unit, Department of Surgery, in collaboration with the Department of Radiology and the Department of Nursing Services, HCTM. The event took place on Monday, October 13, 2025, at the Main Lobby of HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by YBhg: Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Kuala Lumpur Campus.

October is globally and nationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This program was held to educate the public on the dangers of the disease and to emphasize the importance of early detection, which significantly increases the chances of recovery. As an academic healthcare institution, HCTM takes its role in care, treatment, and public health education seriously. The Pink October program not only aims to enhance public knowledge but also reflects the hospital’s ongoing commitment to championing women’s health and community well-being.

Opening Ceremony of World Mental Health Day Celebration 2025

Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), through its Department of Psychiatry, successfully organised the opening ceremony of the World Mental Health Day 2025 Celebration along with the Launch of the TULUS and KASIH Units on Friday, 10 October 2025, at the Auditorium, Chancellor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by Professor Dr. Nik Ruzyanei Nik Jaafar, Head of the Department of Psychiatry, on behalf of the Director of HCTM.

This year’s programme carried the theme “Access to Services – Mental Health in Catastrophes and Emergencies”, emphasising the importance of ensuring accessible mental health services, particularly in the context of disasters and emergencies. The main objectives were to strengthen mental health awareness, improve accessibility through the launch of two new units, and foster strategic collaborations, all while reaffirming mental health support as a fundamental human right.

The launch of the TULUS Unit and KASIH Unit, developed in collaboration with MERCY Malaysia, marks a significant enhancement to HCTM’s mental health services. These units represent the shared commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to quality community-based mental health support. Lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and various natural disasters have underlined the urgent need for comprehensive mental health care.

In line with this, the Department of Psychiatry has also initiated several innovative programmes, including Psychological First Aid, debriefing sessions, counselling, and psychosocial support during the pandemic and flood emergencies. Additionally, IRYS, an interactive chatbot, was introduced to support healthcare workers in monitoring emotional wellbeing, managing stress, and promoting self-recovery strategies. This initiative also extends support to patients’ families, medical students, and HCTM staff as a whole.
