Launch of Rare Disease Awareness Day 2024

The Rare Disease Awareness Day 2024, organized by the Faculty of Medicine UKM and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, was officiated by YB Dato’ Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, on 14 November 2024, at Auditorium of the Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM). This program was organized with the aim to increase the public awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases. Themed “Together We Rise: Let’s Unite for Rare Diseases in Malaysia,” the event called for solidarity in providing comprehensive support for patients and their families.

A rare disease is a condition that is rare or unique, typically affecting only a small group of patients, with an estimated prevalence of one patient per 4,000 to 100,000 people. It is estimated that nearly 5,000 to 9,000 patients in Malaysia suffer from a rare disease, with around 600 patients receiving treatment for rare diseases at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz and Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani, the UKM Children’s Specialist Hospital.

In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia emphasized the challenges faced by patients, including high treatment costs, a lack of specialists, and social stigma. He also urged all relevant stakeholders to work together in developing specific guidelines to ensure that patients receive holistic and inclusive care.

According to Prof. Datin Norlinah in her public lecture, there are approximately 7,000 known rare diseases worldwide, but in Malaysia, only 502 rare diseases are listed by the Ministry of Health (KKM). She added that 80% of these rare diseases are related to genetic disorders, and most patients do not receive an accurate diagnosis or are diagnosed late.

Post-Stroke Care & Rehabilitation Workshop: Updates, Challenges & Opportunities

YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), officiated the ‘Post-Stroke Care & Rehabilitation Workshop: Updates, Challenges & Opportunities’ on 6 November 2024, at the Auditorium, Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, HCTM. The workshop aimed to strengthen knowledge and collaboration in the care and rehabilitation of stroke patients, involving expertise from various disciplines.

 In his speech, the Director of HCTM emphasized the importance of teamwork and communication among healthcare professionals to provide comprehensive services. HCTM is also internationally recognized with the ‘Advanced Stroke Centre’ award for its excellent management of stroke patients, skills, and collaboration in delivering high-quality stroke services, as awarded by the World Stroke Organization (WSO).

UKM Occupational Risk, Safety and Health Week (MRKKP) Opening Ceremony

CHERAS, 21 October 2024 – UKM Occupational Risk, Safety and Health Week (MRKKP) Opening Ceremony organized by the Occupational Risk, Safety and Health Management Center (ROSH-UKM) was held at the Auditorium, Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, this morning.

The ceremony was officiated by YBrs. Ir. Ts. Dr. Majahar Abd Rahman, Deputy Director General (Occupational Health), Department of Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia. In his speech, he hoped that Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia would be able to give full commitment to make occupational health and safety a main agenda in the strategic plan at UKM and empowering the “safe and healthy work culture” especially in the context of the University.

MRKKP which take place from 21 to 25 October 2024 is a collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM), Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani Hospital, UKM Children’s Specialist Hospital and the UKM Medical Molecular Biology Institute (UMBI). Themed ‘A Healthy and Safe Work Environment is the Basic Right of Every Employee’ and the slogan ‘Safe Work and Work Safely’, very much coincide with the importance of safety and health in the workplace.

Among the activities are PPE Equipment and Protection Workshop, Healthy Lifestyle Program: Watan Aerobics, Healthy and Balanced Lifestyle Diet Strategy and various other activities open to all staffs. The inauguration Ceremony also launched the UKM Occupational Safety and Health Handbook as well as the UKM Chemical Register and Inventory.

Inauguration Ceremony of the Community Service Program ‘Let’s Meet the Health Experts’

SITIAWAN, 19 October 2024 – The Inauguration Ceremony of the Community Service Program ‘Let’s Meet Health Experts’ in conjunction with Vascular Awareness Month was held on 18 to 19 October 2024, at the Bestari Community Hall, Mukim Lekir Batu 10, Sitiawan, Perak. The ceremony was attended by the Honorable Senator Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd. Kadir, Minister of Higher Education.

The two-day program was organized by the Vascular Unit, Department of Surgery and Advanced Surgical Skill Center (ASSC) HCTM in collaboration with the International Islamic University of Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia. This program aims to provide awareness, exposure and educate the community, especially symptoms, risk factors, methods of disease detection and prevention, care and treatment about vascular diseases. Vascular health refers to the function of blood vessels in the body, including arteries and veins. Healthy blood vessels are important for maintaining the health of the body’s overall function.

Some of the activities in this program are lectures, free screenings and health checks related to blood vessel and kidney diseases, exhibitions, aerobic activities and activities for children. This program also features UKM’s Academic Figures namely Prof. Associate Dato’ Dr. Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim, Deputy Dean, Industry and Community Network Affairs, Faculty of Islamic Studies UKM in the Casual Chat program ‘Health for Worship’.

Opening Ceremony of Breast Cancer Awareness Week (Pinktober)

The Opening Ceremony of Breast Cancer Awareness Week (Pinktober) held on 30 September 2024 (Monday) at 9.00 am in the Main Lobby, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM. This program is organized by the Department of Radiotherapy and Oncology in collaboration with the HCTM Cancer Center, the National Cancer Council (MAKNA) and Novartis Sdn. Bhd. was held to provide social awareness about breast cancer among cancer patients, families of cancer patients, staffs and the community in general in addition to increasing awareness in providing support to cancer patients as well as expanding the concept of informing the community about cancer.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Director of HCTM said through exposure and knowledge about the risks that can cause breast cancer, society will be more aware and change a healthy lifestyle such as choosing healthy foods, exercising regularly and maintaining an ideal body weight. Some of the activities carried out were the talk entitled ‘Don’t Panic, act wisely: Early Guidance If there’s a lump’ was delivered by YBhg. Prof. Dr. Norlia Abdullah, Professor & Consultant Surgeon, Head of Breast & Endocrine Surgery Unit, Department of Surgery HCTM, cancer servivor’s sharing session, Dr. Kartini Kamalul Ariffin, booth exhibition, and a series of talks on cancer held on October 1, 2024.

Glitz and Glam – Service Award Ceremony 2024

The Service Award Ceremony 2024 held at 8.30pm at Dewan Tun Razak Bank Rakyat Convention Center was held for the first time to honor employees who have devoted themselves and produce great achievements. The speech was delivered by YBhg. Prof. Dato’ Dr. Hanafiah Harunarashid, Pro Vice Chancellor of Kuala Lumpur Campus UKM. According to him, this award ceremony is a space to celebrate employees who have shown high work performance and achievements throughout the year 2023 and employees who have devoted themselves for 20 years.

A total of 238 recipients of the Outstanding Service Award (APC) for the year 2023 and 120 recipients of the 20-Year Service Award attended this ceremony in unique fashion and various styles according to the Glitz and Glam theme. This awarding and recognition can indirectly inject enthusiasm, spark inspiration, become a role model for all employees in forming and strengthening an excellent work ecosystem. The ceremony was also graced with the launch of the latest facilities at HCTM as well as a singing performance by the students of the National Academy of Cultural Arts and Heritage (ASWARA).

Inauguration of Patient Safety Week 2024

 Majlis Perasmian Minggu Keselamatan Pesakit 2024 Peringkat HCTM yang diadakan di Lobi Utama, Blok Klinikal HCTM, hari ini telah disempurnakan oleh Prof. Madya Dr. Jamari Sapuan, Timbalan Pengarah (Perkhidmatan Surgeri) wakil Pengarah HCTM. Minggu Keselamatan Pesakit anjuran Unit Kawalan Infeksi telah diadakan pada 17 hingga 20 September 2024. Bertemakan ‘Improving Diagnosis for Patient Safety’ dan slogan ‘Get it right, Make it Right’, sambutan Hari Keselamatan Pesakit disambut pada 17 September setiap tahun bagi memastikan keselamatan pesakit adalah keutamaan dalam mana-mana sistem penjagaan kesihatan.
Di HCTM, keselamatan pesakit adalah berlandaskan Malaysian Patient Safety Goal 2.0 (MPSG 2.0) yang telah diperkenalkan oleh Kementerian Kesihatan Malaysia (KKM) yang terdiri daripada 7 matlamat iaitu Infection Prevention And Control, Safe Surgery Saves Lives, Medication Safety, Transfusion Safety, Fall Prevention, Patient Identification, dan Incident Report And Learning System. Prof. Madya Dr. Jamari dalam ucapannya merakamkan setinggi-tinggi syabas dan tahniah kepada Unit Kawalan Infeksi dan semua pihak yang terlibat dalam menjayakan program ini bagi mencapai objektif yang disasarkan.
Dalam majlis yang sama, turut diadakan penyampaian hadiah kepada para pemenang ‘Treasure Hunt’ dan Pakaian terbaik mengikut tema keselamatan pesakit. Transition Briefing Session from ICD-10 to ICD-11

YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Pengarah HCTM telah menghadiri Sesi Taklimat Transisi ICD-10 kepada ICD-11 HCTM bertempat di Bilik Mesyuarat Aras 3, Bangunan Blok Tambahan, Kompleks Pendidikan Perubatan Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar, HCTM, hari ini. Pusat Antarabangsa Casemix dan Pengekodan Klinikal (ITCC) merupakan salah satu pusat kecemerlangan HCTM yang memainkan peranan dalam pengekodan klinikal, casemix dan bakal mengambil peranan dalam pemusatan data HCTM. Penggunaan ICD-10 iaitu International Classification of Disease Semakan ke -10 kepada ICD-11 dalam pengekodan klinikal merupakan satu lonjakan ke hadapan yang mencerminkan kemajuan dalam bidang perubatan, teknologi, dan pemahaman tentang kesihatan dan penyakit sepanjang beberapa dekad yang lalu. ICD-11 mewakili sistem klasifikasi yang komprehensif dan mesra digital yang lebih selaras dengan persekitaran penjagaan kesihatan masa kini. Implementasi ICD-11 akan dilakukan secara berfasa mulai Januari 2025 di HCTM. Turut hadir, Encik Mursidi Ahamad, Timbalan Pengarah (Pentadbiran), Prof. Madya Dr. Azimatun Noor Aizuddin, Ketua Pusat Antarabangsa Casemix dan Pengekodan Klinikal (ITCC), Ketua-ketua Jabatan dan warga UKM.
