Friendly Visit of the Director of Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, UKM with the Staff
The Friendly Visit by the Director of HCTM with the Staff took place on December 3, 2024, and December 12, 2024, starting at 9:00 AM. This two-day visit covered all departments/units/centers under the Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HCTM).
The main purpose of this program is to strengthen the relationship between the management and its staff. The Director of HCTM also expressed his gratitude for the cooperation that has been given by all staff. He hoped that the staff would continue to maintain their best momentum in every task carried out to make HCTM the best teaching hospital in Malaysia and internationally. As a symbol of appreciation, the Director presented framed Aspirations of HCTM to the departments/units/centres. The Director of HCTM also had the opportunity to present the same framed Aspiration of HCTM to the Security Division, Kuala Lumpur Campus as a token appreciation for their role in ensuring the success of all the Director’s Friendly Visit sessions.

World Heart Day Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, UKM
The World Heart Day Celebration at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz UKM (HCTM), organized by the Cardiology Unit of the Department of Medicine HCTM, was held on December 12, 2024, at the Kuala Lumpur City Hall Training Institute. The event was officiated by YBrs. Dr. Zairul Azwan Mohd Azman, Deputy Director (Medical Services), representing the Director of HCTM.
The purpose of this World Heart Day celebration was to raise awareness about healthy living, educate staff on heart health care through healthy activities and diets, as well as to avoid smoking, and to provide exposure regarding heart disease and its impact on the population in Malaysia. The Cardiology Unit, Department of Medicine, in collaboration with the Nursing Services Department, Pharmacy Department, Emergency Medicine Department, Dietetics and Food Services Department, and Physiotherapy Unit, Department of Medical Rehabilitation Services, took the initiative to successfully organize the World Heart Day 2024 celebration at HCTM with the theme ‘Use Heart For Action.’ This year, the event was particularly special as it was held for the first time in collaboration with Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
In his speech, the Deputy Director (Medical Services) quoted a statement from the Director-General of Health, Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (2022), highlighting that 80% of hypertension patients are exposed to serious heart disease complications, and heart disease has remained the leading cause of death among Malaysians for 13 years from 2005 to 2017. Non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and unhealthy diet and lifestyle habits also contribute to the increase in heart disease. According to the Malaysia “National Cardiovascular Disease (NCVD) ACS/PCI registry” data, the age of patients suffering from heart attacks is significantly younger compared to other countries (about 10 years younger, with an average age of 58 years). 25% of patients are under 50 years old.
Several activities were carried out, including knowledge sharing and raising awareness about heart health issues. A forum titled ‘Heart Attacks Know No Age’ was held as part of the celebration. In addition, activities such as health screenings, heart health tests (ECG and Echo), health exhibitions, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) demonstrations, and consultations with heart specialists were also organized. The forum discussed the critical importance of heart health and its connection to the professions of Kuala Lumpur City Hall staffs.

Majlis Pelancaran Kemudahan Terkini Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM)
Majlis Pelancaran Kemudahan Terkini Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) yang berlangsung pada 2 Disember 2024 (Isnin) di Lobi Utama HCTM bertujuan untuk memperkenalkan pelbagai kemudahan baharu yang disediakan oleh hospital ini. Pelancaran ini dirasmikan oleh YBhg. Prof. Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Mohamad Abd. Razak, Pengerusi Lembaga Pengarah Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
Inisiatif ini adalah sebahagian daripada usaha berterusan HCTM untuk meningkatkan keselesaan pesakit dan memberikan perkhidmatan yang lebih baik kepada masyarakat. Antara kemudahan terkini yang dilancarkan ialah Lobi Kemasukan dan Discaj dan Klinik Virtual.

Graduation Ceremony of the Taska Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz Session 2024
A total of 19 children from the daycare received certificates of appreciation at the Graduation Ceremony of the Taska Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM) Session 2024, held on November 26, 2024 (Tuesday) at the Auditorium, Advanced Surgical Skills Centre (ASSC), HCTM. The ceremony was officiated by YBhg. Dato’ Dr. Azmi Baharudin, Director of HCTM. In his speech, the Director quoted the Malaysian Minister of Education, stating that education is about the formation of ‘mind and character,’ referring to the cultivation of admirable qualities, which includes the development of knowledge, character building, and refinement of manners and ethics to nurture a respectful and courteous generation. He also emphasized the importance of early education provided by educators to the children at the daycare, such as instilling good values and character in shaping them to grow into useful individuals.

Launch of Rare Disease Awareness Day 2024
The Rare Disease Awareness Day 2024, organized by the Faculty of Medicine UKM and Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz, was officiated by YB Dato’ Lukanisman Awang Sauni, Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, on 14 November 2024, at Auditorium of the Canselor Tuanku Ja’afar Medical Education Complex, Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz (HCTM). This program was organized with the aim to increase the public awareness and understanding of the challenges faced by patients with rare diseases. Themed “Together We Rise: Let’s Unite for Rare Diseases in Malaysia,” the event called for solidarity in providing comprehensive support for patients and their families.
A rare disease is a condition that is rare or unique, typically affecting only a small group of patients, with an estimated prevalence of one patient per 4,000 to 100,000 people. It is estimated that nearly 5,000 to 9,000 patients in Malaysia suffer from a rare disease, with around 600 patients receiving treatment for rare diseases at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz and Hospital Tunku Ampuan Besar Tuanku Aishah Rohani, the UKM Children’s Specialist Hospital.
In his speech, the Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia emphasized the challenges faced by patients, including high treatment costs, a lack of specialists, and social stigma. He also urged all relevant stakeholders to work together in developing specific guidelines to ensure that patients receive holistic and inclusive care.
According to Prof. Datin Norlinah in her public lecture, there are approximately 7,000 known rare diseases worldwide, but in Malaysia, only 502 rare diseases are listed by the Ministry of Health (KKM). She added that 80% of these rare diseases are related to genetic disorders, and most patients do not receive an accurate diagnosis or are diagnosed late.

Inauguration Ceremony of the Community Service Program ‘Let’s Meet the Health Experts’
SITIAWAN, 19 October 2024 – The Inauguration Ceremony of the Community Service Program ‘Let’s Meet Health Experts’ in conjunction with Vascular Awareness Month was held on 18 to 19 October 2024, at the Bestari Community Hall, Mukim Lekir Batu 10, Sitiawan, Perak. The ceremony was attended by the Honorable Senator Dato’ Seri Diraja Dr. Zambry Abd. Kadir, Minister of Higher Education.
The two-day program was organized by the Vascular Unit, Department of Surgery and Advanced Surgical Skill Center (ASSC) HCTM in collaboration with the International Islamic University of Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia. This program aims to provide awareness, exposure and educate the community, especially symptoms, risk factors, methods of disease detection and prevention, care and treatment about vascular diseases. Vascular health refers to the function of blood vessels in the body, including arteries and veins. Healthy blood vessels are important for maintaining the health of the body’s overall function.
Some of the activities in this program are lectures, free screenings and health checks related to blood vessel and kidney diseases, exhibitions, aerobic activities and activities for children. This program also features UKM’s Academic Figures namely Prof. Associate Dato’ Dr. Mohd Izhar Ariff Mohd Kashim, Deputy Dean, Industry and Community Network Affairs, Faculty of Islamic Studies UKM in the Casual Chat program ‘Health for Worship’.
